From ukiyo-e of the Edo period to manga and kawaii culture, Japan’s design trends have had a major influence on graphic design today. From the shiburi art to woodblock prints, geometric and floral patterns abound in Japanese design. With striking (and daunting) natural features like earthquakes, volcanoes and typhoons, Japanese culture is keenly aware of the environment. The Japanese people celebrate nature and the seasons like no one else. Today, Japanese design has become even more conscious about environmental problems like global warming and pollution.

It is a reflection of Japanese culture and values, emphasizing the beauty of imperfection, the importance of balance, and the serenity of minimalist spaces. Akin to her delightfully interactive website, Tsumori Chisato is a unique, and bright high fashion designer. Minimalism is another key principle of Japanese graphic design, and designers often use negative space to create a sense of balance and elegance. Typography is especially important in Japanese design, and designers often use traditional calligraphy techniques to create unique and engaging typographic elements. Japanese graphic designers are renowned for their attention to detail and craftsmanship. Select a concise palette of natural materials, including wood, stone, and glass. Image 11 is a package design for tea that shows asymmetry, especially the off-center vertical rule. The botanical illustration creates pattern, repetition, and movement that directs the eye to the center label and then down to the brand mark in the lower left corner.

A masterpiece in Japanese literature that captures ma in a narrative form is Yasunari Kawabata’s novel Snow Country (Image 2). The novel is about a love affair between a Tokyo dilettante and a provincial geisha set in a remote hot springs town in the early 20th century. The narrative is spacious and poetic, economical like a Hemingway novel and also written around the same period. It has a haiku feel to it, a brevity, and a void—like ma—that prompts the reader to connect the dots.

Minimalism

"Doors with Japanese WASHI paper or made with Kumiko woodworking are art pieces that are naturally incorporated into the architecture while keeping the space very simple," Kaneko says. Follow the same rules for color palette and materials to keep tables, chairs, and accessories in harmony with interior finishes. Select natural materials (ideally light wood finishes or porcelain dishware), and keep the aesthetic clean-lined and minimal. With similar tones and textures working in tandem, aesthetic harmony is achieved.

How you write is as important as what you write, and the austere simplicity of black ink on white paper is considered high art. By incorporating these practical tips, you can create a zen-inspired living room that promotes relaxation, mindfulness, and well-being in your home. Japanese folklore says that all things have its own spirit—even things that are inanimate like a stone or a box.

These mass-produced prints from the 1600s to 1900s marked the beginning of commercial graphic design in Japan. Clean lines, generous amounts of negative space, and a limited color palette are just a few of the hallmarks of Japanese graphic design. The simplicity, elegance, and attention to detail that define this style of design are what make it so mesmerizing. Whether it’s through the use of traditional symbols, such as cherry blossoms or Mount Fuji, or contemporary imagery, these elements create designs that are both beautiful and evocative. Japanese graphic designers are known for their precision and attention to detail (craftsmanship is a key component of the design process). By simplifying designs and focusing on the essentials, Japanese graphic designers are able to create visuals that are both powerful and understated.

While designers are committed to preserving traditional design practices, they are also always pushing the boundaries and experimenting with new techniques and technologies. Designers often use color, imagery, and symbolism to evoke emotional responses and create designs that are both thought-provoking and memorable. Designers often incorporate imagery of the country’s stunning landscapes such as cherry blossoms and Mount Fuji, to create designs that are both beautiful and evocative. Japanese design also uses the concept of "ma." Ma is defined as negative or empty space. In Japanese culture, ma is not only a design concept but a cultural concept that focuses on unoccupied space and time that allows people to pause and breathe. In design, ma is used by avoiding filling rooms to the brim to maintain empty space.

But it was not only artists like Edgar Degas, Vincent van Gogh and Mary Cassat who were moved by artworks such as Katsushika Hokusai’s and Utagawa Hiroshige’s early 19th-century ukiyo-e woodblock prints. Think of a traditional Japanese house and what elements come to mind? Despite massive technological shifts, certain handmade qualities and design values persist. These traditional traces, whether visible brushstrokes or invisible zen-inspired minimalism, infuse contemporary works with cultural richness. They blend harmoniously with modern, globalised aesthetics, as seen in the convergence between precision Swiss grids and irregular Japanese fabrics. Ukiyo-e, or “pictures of the floating world,” were popular Edo-period woodblock prints and paintings depicting entertainment districts and daily life scenes.

What Netflix's House Of Cards Cast Is Doing Now

Spacey was cut from the film All the Money in the World, and his role as John Paul Getty was instead played by Christopher Plummer. The most polarising and controversial cast members of them all, Kevin Spacey’s fall from grace has been nothing short of dramatic. Several allegations of sexual misconduct lead to Spacey leaving the role of Frank Underwood, which ultimately lead to the character dying off-screen. Mara has gone in to star in plenty of roles, her biggest being Sue Storm in Fox’s failed reboot of the Fantastic Four franchise. Scheduled for release sometime in 2020, Mara will be playing the role of Claire in the series A Teacher. The drama will explore the complexities and consequences of a female teacher caught having affair with a male student.

Well, that's what the cast of House of Cards has been up to lately, or at least most of the cast. If there is someone you think I left off, make sure to let me know in the comments below. Sebastian Arcelus' portrayal of reporter Lucas Goodwin will probably go down as one of the most traumatizing and unforgettable descents into madness featured on the show. In trying to find dirt and take down Frank Underwood, Goodwin's life (professional and personal) continues to get worse and worse until its tragic ending.

He also impersonates Collingridge's alcoholic brother to trade shares and benefit from advance information confidential to the government. Collingridge becomes falsely accused of insider trading and resigns partly to save face, partly to care for his brother after he suffers a guilt-induced decline in his health.

The antihero of House of Cards is Francis Urquhart, a fictional Chief Whip of the Conservative Party, played by Ian Richardson. Major document dumps are made available to Hammerschmidt, which, among other charges, prompts an impeachment hearing against Frank. In response, the Underwoods set up extensive surveillance on all White House personnel. Eventually, the leaker makes a voice-modulated call to Hammerschmidt, implicating Doug in Zoe's murder.

Annette plans to use Claire's prior abortions against her, but Claire retaliates by revealing to Duncan he is not Annette's biological son.

Final season and firing of Spacey

Robin Wright's portrayal of Claire Underwood in House of Cards will probably go down as one of the most significant and decorated performances on a television program. From lobbyist to the President of the United States, Claire was a driving force which was brought to life by Wright's mastery of the medium. Since the show's shocking finale in 2018, the Golden Globe winner has continued to stay busy with her work in the DC Extended Universe, including the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984 and the 2021 release of Zack Snyder's Justice League.

The only two actors to have main appearances in all six seasons of House of Cards are Robin Wright and Michael Kelly. Rachel Brosnahan had a very limited time on House of Cards compared to other actors on this list, but by all means, she had a great impact on the characters she interacted with. Since leaving the series Brosnahan has starred in various different roles but her most outstanding one to date would be playing the lead role in the series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Meanwhile, Hammerschmidt continues to investigate Zoe's death, and is given information by an unknown leaker within the White House.

An investigative journalist, formerly editor-in-chief of the Washington Herald, and perennial, who is set on bringing Frank underwood down, undeterred by the suspicious deaths of his former colleagues Zoe Barnes and Lucas Goodwin. Campbell played the heroine in Wes Craven's Scream film series, and was in the cast of the 90s teen drama Party of Five. One of the most intriguing aspects of Darrow’s character was his relationship with the Underwoods. In the second season, Meechum has a threesome with Underwoods but is shown to have kissed Frank along with Claire. As this was a few years before Kevin Spacey announced his sexuality in the wake of the allegations against him, the scene is even more eye-opening with what we know about the actor today. Since the end of House of Cards, Catherine Durrant has starred in another Political drama, Madam Secretary.

The devious democratic politician who became the 46th president of the United States after underhandedly engineering the resignation of his former chief. Season 5 finds him hot on the campaign trail for the 2016 presidential election, while stoking the fears of the American public by hamming up the threat of terrorism. Spacey has since been cleared of any charges related to sexual misconduct but his reputation and career have been completely tarnished. The veteran actor filmed his role for Michael Hoffman’s film Gore, but despite being completed since December 2018, the film has yet to see the light of day. Despite Frank Underwood’s death, Kevin Spacey has taken it upon himself to reprise the role in two short films. Since his role in House of Cards as Remy Denton, Mahershala Ali has shown to the world just how gifted an actor he truly is.

However, the hacker, Gavin Orsay, actually works for Doug and frames Lucas for cyberterrorism. Rachel, fearing potential harm and Doug's growing obsession with her, ambushes Doug and leaves him for dead, fleeing into hiding. However, Underwood learns that the President wants him to promote his agenda in Congress and will not honor their agreement. Frank's wife Claire runs an NGO, the Clean Water Initiative, which she uses to cultivate her own power; she seeks to expand its scope to the international stage, often using Frank's connections.

The actress currently has a role in the NBC drama Bluff City Law, playing the role of Della Bedford. Jayne Atkinson played a key role as Catherine Durrant in Frank Underwood’s rise to the top of his political career. Despite surviving Frank pushing her down the stairs, it would be Claire that put the nail in the former Secretary of State coffin. Despite her attempt to flee to the French Alps, an assassin, hired by Claire, shot and killed her. Appearing 50 episodes across 4 seasons, it’s surprising Derek Cecil’s character Seth Grayson lived till the end.

He conceives a calculated and meticulous plan to bring down the new Prime Minister and replace him, on the same lines as Shakespeare's Richard III (which he often quotes). During this drawn-out and ruthless coup, his life is complicated by his relationship with young female reporter Mattie Storin, whom he uses to leak sensitive information in confidence. The question of whether the serial's ending is a tragedy (in the same vein as plays such as Macbeth) is left to the viewer.

Tom Hammerschmidt, Zoe and Lucas's former news editor, digs deeper into the latter's claims of Frank's misdeeds. He approaches Remy and, with his help, starts to piece together Frank's corruption. Tom also meets with Walker, convincing him to help by appealing to his anger for being forced to resign. Remy Danton and Jackie Sharp also decide to go on the record against Frank to lend credibility to the story. An American family is kidnapped in Tennessee by two supporters of a radical Islamist group called the Islamic Caliphate Organization (ICO), who agree to negotiate only with the ambitious Republican nominee, Governor Will Conway.

The Underwoods convince Doug to take the fall for killing Zoe, and the leaker is revealed to be Frank himself. The leaks are revealed to be part of Frank's master plan to resign the presidency to Claire, believing his thirst for power can be better achieved in the private sector, working alongside his wife's presidency. Frank, concerned about Secretary Durant's intention to testify at the impeachment hearing, pushes her down a short flight of stairs upon accepting her resignation, hospitalizing her. Claire poisons Yates with an overdose of Gelsemium provided to her by Jane, concerned that he knows too much.

Four months after the murders, Claire reverts to her maiden name and continues her progressive agenda. Annette, now strained from Bill, plots with Usher, no longer Vice President, to assassinate Claire. She asks Doug to perpetrate the act, but he is reluctant, mainly desiring to protect Frank's legacy. Claire, through now-Speaker Cole, blackmails Justice Abruzzo into recusing himself in a case dealing with her power to launch nuclear weapons. Janine Skorsky and Doug continue to work to uncover the Underwoods, with Doug leaking contents of Frank's secret audio diary while Claire blames everything on Frank.

When we first opened Moon Hill Brewing Co. at the site of the Gardner Ale House it was our aim to do things differently. Don’t just be a restaurant; don’t just be a brewery; be another kind of place. The kind that’s just interesting to enter, interesting to look around. Everybody else closes on Mondays because business is slow.

Visit gardnerale.com, (also moonhillbrewing.com) or just drop in. Oktoberfest is the essential celebration that identifies the Ale House and what it is and wants to be for people and Downtown Gardner. We hope you can come out and celebrate an ambitious project-in-people called Gardner Ale House. We are twice as big on this day and the Downtown merchants are in on it, too.

He thought he was in too much pain to pull it off anyway – he had to moan and writhe, as required. We have the authentic German fare of sausages, sauerkraut, potato salad, and soft pretzels. We sport our Moon Hill Brewing Co.’s Oktoberfest Lager and much more beer, beer, beer.

One of these extensions is the Brewery, which is what you need to turn Malt into Ale. Once you have a supply of Barley, you can turn it into Malt by constructing a Malthouse. The Malthouse is found in the Industry tab of the build menu, and can be constructed out of 4x Timber. We'd recommend building it close to the Farmhouse, to minimise travel time between the two buildings.

Beer

As with most city-builders, Manor Lords has a frightful number of different resources to craft, and needs to fulfil to keep your populace happy. And as we all know, the key to a happy citizen is alcohol. Ale can be drunk at a Tavern to keep your citizens jolly, but the process to create your own Ale is not at all straightforward. To build a new Plot with a Backyard Extension slot, look for an icon of a house with a hammer inside it when placing down the corners of the Plot. Next, you should select one of your Burgage Plots with a Backyard Extension slot (or build one if you don't have it), and upgrade that plot to Level 2. The upgrade itself only costs 4x Timber, but you can only upgrade a Burgage Plot if all its happiness requirements are met.

We make our own beer, and just about everything on our casual, bistro style menu. We generally have 14 of our beers on tap. Live music Thursday-Saturday & Monday. With Boston style ambiance, we are your oasis in North Central Massachusetts!

Most beers listed below are available to fill in crowlers and growlers (and kegs!) to-go. We have lawn games for adults and kids’ activities, too. Our neighbor, Lakin’s Children’s Fine Apparel will be out in the street, too. We have German brat sausages, hamburgers, hot dogs and pizza to round out the festival feel.

So every Monday afternoon, beginning at 4pm we break out the New England oysters. They come from all over and they all taste different. You can become a connoisseur in just 4 visits, an expert in just 8 and a bon vivant any time you want. With authentic German folk music by the Hofbrahaus Bavarians, playing in the morning, we now begin formally with this tapping and the singing of Ein Prosit. Inside it’s a taproom with a beautiful bar with seating for 100 and a ceiling fan that will leave you breathless, literally.

Dubbed “Party In The Street”, Oktoberfest is a profession of our wanton love of celebration in a moderately regulated fashion, outside, for everyone. Perhaps the key words here are party, wanton, outside and everyone. Such a celebration cannot occur very often or it will dull itself. However, as it does occur, the thrill goes right through ones bones. And as our Oktoberfest grows and adds more community groups and more events, the opportunities to play are myriad, the interconnections nearly numberless. To miss this is sadness, to compete is insanity. The Ale House owner was insane once, and paid for it. He actually, believably, faked his own death for about 15 seconds. Some people didn’t think it was funny.

If you love transatlantic sailings, check out Evrima's 13-night April 14 itinerary that departs San Juan and arrives in Lisbon, Portugal with calls on Hamilton, Bermuda; Horta and Ponta Delgada in The Azores; plus nine sea days.

But cabins with six-digit prices aren't unheard of.

Savor new flavors in one of five restaurants, and indulge in rejuvenating treatments at The Ritz-Carlton Spa. For that price, the luxury hospitality giant says travelers would enjoy a one-to-one guest-to-staff ratio and massive suites spanning as many as four floors. If all goes as planned, the 679-foot-long Four Seasons I could become one of the most expensive and opulent options in the cruise industry. Evrima is just the first of several vessels that Ritz-Carlton plans for its new cruising arm. Whether the ship really is ready to run at the sort of luxury level Ritz-Carlton fans expect remains to be seen. The ship has been plagued by construction problems for years, resulting in a succession of eight delays that have pushed back its arrival by nearly three years.

Here's what you can expect on the deck of the Ritz-Carlton yachts. But it's the spa treatments most people get excited about. Aboard the yacht, there are several massage options, such as the 60-or 90-minute signature "Evrima" massage (starting at $255), where light to moderate pressure is paired with aromatherapy essential oils.

Also available are deep muscle massages (starting at $205) and piedras calientes therapy treatments, which use warmed stones (starting at $275). After a day in port, you might want the hour-long black masque Leg Renewal Treatment ($130) that alleviates tired legs by reducing inflammation and encouraging enhanced circulation. Upon arrival at your suite, a chilled bottle of Moët et Chandon (Grande Marque Champagne, Brut Imperial, Non-Vintage, according to a publicist we spoke to) will greet you.

Staterooms can accommodate third and fourth guests at a rate of 50% of the first and second berth rate. Note that a limited number of roll-away beds are available upon request. If you are a Marriott elite, here's what you can expect onboard. Even if you don't plan to get in the water, The Marina is an ideal spot to spend a sunny day. Guests can also take advantage of complimentary group exercise programs and presentations on such wellness topics as nutrition. There is an All-Day Dining menu that can be served in your suite or on your balcony 24/7.

In April she repositions from Florida to the Mediterranean, first Lisbon then Barcelona. The Ilma continues to sail from Rome, Athens, and Barcelona until autumn when she repositions to Puerto Rico and Fort Lauderdale. The Ilama sails from San Juan and Barbados through late March 2025 before sailing to Lisbon via Fort Lauderdale. She sails the Mediterranean through June before heading north, first to Portsmouth, England, then Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Stockholm, Oslo and eventually Reykjavik in August. There also are two massive, 1,091-square-foot Owner's Suites at the back of the vessel with giant, 635-square-foot wraparound balconies.

Those in the mood for aquatic recreation can head to the Marina, an aft platform on deck 3 where a stash of complimentary water toys (sea kayaks, stand-up paddle boards, and more) are available when the ship is at anchor. Where other cruise lines such as Viking and Virgin Voyages have barred children from their ships, Ritz-Carlton has no such limitations on its yachts. (We're reaching out to The Ritz to find out the exact cost, but a passenger reported it cost $625 for her and her boyfriend to dine there.) In terms of food, it's a "European tasting menu;" more details to come. The Ritz yacht offers a nice mix of voyages that span four to 12 nights, making it much easier for working professionals to book them.

Two Terrace Suites are ADA-compliant (adhering to standards set forth by the Americans with Disabilities Act). The line tapped Tillberg Design of Sweden to envision its cabins. With a private yacht feel, akin to The Ritz-Carlton Residences in Florida's Sunny Isles Beach and Miami Beach, along with Los Angeles, the emphasis is on comfortable open-concept spaces and natural light. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection has an option to order two additional yachts from the shipyard. It will be interesting to see if the line sticks to its three initial ships or expands to a five-ship fleet. According to the cruise line, it has an eye toward sustainability.

Evrima’s entertainment lineup is much narrower in scope than more traditional cruise ships, even small luxury vessels operated by lines such as Regent, Seabourn, and Silversea. Travelers can also use Marriott Bonvoy points for a discount on their cruise fare (180,000 points for a $1,000 savings, with increments of 90,000 points each offering a $500 savings thereafter). Marriott Bonvoy member status will also be recognized onboard with benefits such as in-suite welcome gifts and priority boarding and departure. At TPG, we recommend that travelers always use a travel agent that specializes in cruise travel to book their cruises.

The company initially used a shipyard to build Evrima that had little experience constructing upscale vessels. While the official daytime dress code is “Yacht Casual,” the word yacht does imply designer labels, so you can expect some above-average attire amid the typical cruise wardrobe of sundresses, shorts, and t-shirts. Shirts, shoes, and cover-ups are required when not at the pools and bathing suits and sleeveless t-shirts are not permitted in restaurants during dinner. Only S.E.A. restaurant has a “Yacht Sophisticated” dress code, meaning collared shirts for men are recommended but not required. Passengers seeking rejuvenation can visit the onboard Ritz-Carlton Spa, where massages, facials, and body treatments feature ESPA and 111SKIN products (at an added cost).

Sail into the heart of iconic cities and drop anchor off secluded island hideways. Explore the natural beauty of rugged Mediterranean coastlines. Here, freedom and flexibility allow immersion in life's most exceptional experiences.

So it was a thrilling moment when its first ship, Evrima, welcomed guests in Barcelona on Saturday. We never forget that curiosity, awe and adventure are what make travel so transformative, both on land and at sea. Its 2024 vacation-by-air itineraries started at $135,000 for a 16-day Asia tour.

Pressing, laundry and dry-cleaning services are available upon request through in-suite services for an additional cost. A self-service Guest Launderette is located on Deck 9, where an iron, washer, dryer and detergent will be available at no additional cost. In the evening, put away the sleeveless T-shirts and bathing suits.
